In the ugly winter of 1911, eight months before the birth of my
father, I woke up to the scent of a girl, like orange blossoms under a
red sun.
Six months earlier, I was lying tired in a small apartment, at the
end of some small street, edging off this invisible planet, counting
sheep, restless and bored - suffering through one of my usual bouts with
insomnia. It was forty-one days in, and I was nursing a "mild" uneasiness,
the onset of which was marked by the return of sheep one hundred and
twenty-seven, followed in, almost immediately, by sheep one hundred and
twenty-eight - such things are inevitable. Then one twenty-nine came,
burglared in, passing before me immense, terrifying, grazing for rest
beneath my sheets - and I embarked, set into the slow frenzy. ...
